New research has shown that up to 90% of all cancers are caused by poor lifestyle choices like smoking, drinking and sunbathing.

Ditching the old theory that two-third of cancers come down to luck, scientists now believe that the majority of us can actually prevent cancer.

A team of doctors from the Stony Brook Cancer Centre in New York said that they consistently found a range of cancers to have a 70-90% link to lifestyle factors.

Researchers have been investigating why some countries have much higher rates of cancer than others and the results are shocking.

The study found that 75% of colorectal cancer is caused by diet. 86% of skin cancer cases are a direct result of excess sun exposure while 75% of head and neck cancer cases are due to alcohol and tobacco.
